Shire Hall launches its first Memory Cafe

On Monday 2nd of August, Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum will be launching a Memory Cafe, a relaxed drop-in session for those with memory difficulties and their carers and/or family members.

The sessions will run from 10am-12pm every first Monday of the month. The first session wilI be starting with a coffee and chat, and as the sessions grow activities and workshops will be introduced.

Based in Dorchester, Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum brings over 200 years of justice and injustice to life. With interactive galleries, immersive cells and the impressive courtroom, there is something for everyone to enjoy at the museum.

Abbie King, Director of Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum, told KeeP 106: “We are delighted to be launching a Memory Cafe at Shire Hall Historic Courthouse Museum. This is a really important asset for Dorchester and one we are very proud of Being confined to your house shouldn’t be the social norm. Having a cup of tea and a chat, in the right space, where daily challenges are removed even for just a couple of hours, can make a real difference to people’s lives.”

As an organisation, Shire Hall has recently become Dementia Friends through Alzheimer’s Society, and staff have undergone dementia awareness training. The Memory Cafe will be held in Shire Hall’s Learning room, one of its light and open spaces. People will have the opportunity to interact and socialise, alongside delicious food!

This is simple support that goes a long way, for both those with dementia, and their carers. We need to work together as a community”.
Entry to Shire Hall Memory Cafe is free. The Cafe will be open to purchase drinks and snacks at a discounted rate.
